APGAR score
The Apgar score is a quick assessment used to evaluate the health of a newborn immediately after birth. It was developed by Dr. Virginia Apgar in 1952. The score is determined at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth (and sometimes at 10 minutes if needed). It assesses five key criteria, each scored from 0 to 2, for a total score ranging from 0 to 10.
Components:
1. Appearance (Skin Color)
0: Blue/pale all over
1: Pink body, blue extremities
2: Pink all over
2. Pulse (Heart Rate)
0: Absent
1: < 100 beats per minute
2: ≥ 100 beats per minute
3. Grimace (Reflex Irritability)
0: No response
1: Grimace/weak cry
2: Vigorous cry
4. Activity (Muscle Tone)
0: Limp
1: Some flexion of extremities
2: Active motion
5. Respiration (Breathing Effort)
0: Absent
1: Weak/irregular gasping
2: Strong cry
Interpretation:
7–10: Normal; baby is generally in good health.
4–6: Moderately depressed; may require medical intervention.
0–3: Severely depressed; requires immediate resuscitation.
It helps guide immediate care but does not predict long-term outcomes.
